That was the look on my face at the start of my Greek and Roman history class when I plugged my laptop cord into the wall. Just after I moved my hand out of the way, there was a loud poping noise, sparks and flame, followed by blue smoke.

The teacher at the front of the room looked alarmed and asked if everyone was o.k. and if anything was broken. At the time I didn't think anything was. Unfortunatly, my cord fried. Luckily it wasn't plugged into my laptop at the time, so it was the only thing that fried.

Ya, it split the cord, and part of the wire went flying to boot. So I used up all my battery power, and then called my Mom and got her to check my warrenty to see if it was still valid. It was and I asked her to bring the paper and we went off to London Drugs. The cord was included under the warrenty, but they would have to special order a replacement for me. They don't carry one in stock with enough voltage to supply my laptop with enough power. Well I ask the guy to order it, then ask that if I find a replacement somewhere else will they give me the money. He says it'll be a crap shoot and up to manager on duty at the time.

So I go out to the car, fill my Mom in, and she tells me to call my Dad and ask his advice. He says to take the chance with the refund thing and go look for another. During this time my Mom asks me to ask him if we have one at home that will do the job. He says no, I say no as well (because I didn't know about one of them, but more on that later).

We go to Future Shop, find one that works and buy it. The guy there askes if I put the cord in a microwave or soemthing because it is so fried. I explain what happened and he is shocked. He suggested I also get a surge protector (which I had been looking at before, but had only found expensive bulky ones) and pointed me in the direction of another store with cheap ones.

Well we get home and I show my Dad what I got. It goes into the den and comes back with an identical one. That's right, he had one. He didn't know if it was the right kind so he hadn't mentioned it, but it turns out, we just spent like 160 bucks we may not have needed to. So I'm using my new cord now (plus surge protector my Dad had laying around and has lent/given to me, it's effectivly mine until he wants to use it). If London Drugs refunds me the money, we keep both. If not, well, my parents can sort that one out. I'm wondering if this thing has like a heat shut off or something though. Every once in a while it just kinda shuts off... :S very odd. If it keeps doing it I'll play with the tips of it or something (it's a universal one, lots of attachments) to see if I can fix it. If not, well, we know how to get rid of one of them. :P

Anyway! I'm alright, I dodged a potentially leathal bullet (ya, apparently the power that fried my cord could have killed my sorry ass). And my laptop is working, so I guess all is well.

Except for that midterm on wed...
